Kicking things off in the first round (10th overall) was forward Alex Drover. Alex was the first player from Nova Scotia selected and joins Shane Bowers and Justin Barron as the third QMJHL 1st round selection from the Macs in the last 4 yrs. Drover is the third highest selection in team history behind Bowers (4th - 2015) and Stephen Dixon (6th - 2001). The electric goal scorer will most definitely be a fan favourite in Cape Breton!
Up next in the 7th round, Logan Carruthers was selected by the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. The Eagles are getting a highly competitive, gritty defenceman who is not afraid to join the rush. Logan is a fearless defender and a great teammate. Of note, Logans father Andrew was once an official in the QMJHL.
Next to hear his name called was Zachary Byard by the home town Halifax Mooseheads in the 12th round. Byard was one of the Macs most improved players this season and played a very sound defensive game for the Macs this yr. At 6'2 and 195lbs Zach will be an imposing defender as his game and body continues to develop.
Byard and Carruthers join a long list of Halifax defenders drafted in their first year of major midget. They join the likes of Nick Yuill, Nick Welsh, Morgan Nauss, Christian Huntley, Jarrett Baker and Justin Barron to name a few.
Finally in the 13th round, the Memorial Cup Champion, Acadie Bathurst Titan selected net minder Alec MacVicar. MacVicar led the NSMMHL in GAA (1.69), save percentage (0.94), shut outs (5) and was 2nd in wins (15). MacVicar joins some strong company with Macs goalies being drafted in the past few yrs. Names like Mason McDonald, Reilly Pickard, Matthew Welsh and Dakota Lund-Cornish have all been selected in drafts since 2012 and moved on to crack QMJHL lineups.
Also congratulations go out to Macs affiliate player from the 17-18 season Josh Crooks. Josh was selected in the 14th round by the Moncton Wildcats. Josh was a frequent call up for our club and competed in the Monctonian and QMJHL prospects game while there. Josh played this season with the Dartmouth Vees of the NS Minor Midget league where he finished 2nd overall in league scoring. Josh becomes the first player selected from this new league and we look forward to working with him next yr in his development.
Congrats guys and good luck at camps!
